Piperacillin +Tazobactam Injection
Piperacillin + tazobactam is a drug of the ‘Antibiotics’ class and is mainly indicated for the treatment of bacterial infections. It treats many hospital-acquired and ventilator-associated pneumonias, urinary tract infections, intra-abdominal infections, skin and soft tissue infections (such as diabetic foot infections), and uterine infections. Bacterial infection results from the growth of harmful bacteria in the body that leads to illness. It can affect any area of the body and grows very rapidly.
Piperacillin + tazobactam consists of two drugs: Piperacillin (a Penicillin antibiotic) and Tazobactam (a beta-lactamase inhibitor). Piperacillin is a class of ‘Penicillin antibiotics.’ It possesses bactericidal (bacterial killing) activity against gram-positive and gram-negative aerobic (oxygen-requiring) and anaerobic (survives with minimal or no oxygen) bacteria. Piperacillin inhibits by binding to the penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) within the bacterial cell wall and preventing its cell wall synthesis. Tazobactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Beta-lactamases are the bacterial enzymes that enable bacteria to develop multi-resistance against β-lactam antibiotics, like penicillin and cephalosporins. Tazobactam inhibits the degradation of other antibiotics by beta-lactamase enzyme-forming organisms. In Piperacillin + tazobactam, Tazobactam inhibits bacteria from destroying Piperacillin.
Benefits:
- Piperacillin is an antibiotic of the Penicillin class. It inhibits by binding with the penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) of the bacterial cell wall and preventing cell wall synthesis.
- Tazobactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that inhibits the degradation of other antibiotics by beta-lactamase enzyme-producing bacteria.
- Tazobactam inhibits the action of bacteria to destroy Piperacillin.
- Piperacillin + tazobactam is used to treat bacterial infections of the stomach, lungs, skin, and uterus.
Uses:
- Piperacillin + tazobactam is used to treat severe intra-abdominal infections by treating the bacteria causing these infections.
- This injection is utilized in treating serious infections in females, such as pelvic inflammatory disease and endometritis, by acting against a wide range of bacteria.
- This medication also works in the treatment of urinary tract infections, assisting in getting rid of the bacteria responsible for the infections.
- This medication treats complicated skin and soft tissue infections, such as those from surgical wounds, bites, or diabetic foot infections.
Instructions on usage:
- Do not inject it into yourself.
- Pinch the skin tightly between your index finger and thumb swiftly.
- Insert the needle directly into the muscle.
- Pull back the plunger; withdraw the needle from the skin if there is blood in the syringe.
