Fosfomycin Injection

Fosfomycin is an antibiotic used to prevent and treat bladder infections. Bladder infections are primarily caused by bacterial infection. Bacteria get inside the body via the urethra, travel into the bladder, and infect it.

Fosfomycin is a drug that helps prevent the creation of the bacterial cell wall (a protective layer) essential for survival. It therefore kills bacteria. In addition, Fosfomycin inhibits bacteria attachment to urinary bladder lining cells and prevents E.coli bacteria bladder infection.

Advantages:

  • Fosfomycin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that kills gram-negative and gram-positive aerobic and anaerobic bacteria.
  • Fosfomycin inhibits the development of the required bacterial cell wall (a protective layer) for survival.
  • Fosfomycin prevents bacterial adherence to urinary bladder epithelial lining cells, thus inhibiting bladder infection due to E.coli bacteria.

Uses:

  • Fosfomycin treats uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) due to susceptible bacteria.
  • Fosfomycin is used in the treatment of cystitis, which is inflammation of the bladder, frequently associated with bacterial infection.
  • Preventively, Fosfomycin can be given to patients at high risk of recurrent urinary tract infections in some instances.
  • Fosfomycin is administered for the prevention of UTI after surgery in patients who are undergoing particular surgical procedures.

Directions to use:

  • Diarrhea is a frequent side effect. Tell your doctor if it does not improve or if you notice stools with blood.
